The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce recommends funding for a study to be conducted by the University of Calgary and CIRANO on the feasibility of creating the Northern Corrido

The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce has just released a report on a visionary infrastructure project entitled "National Corridor: Enhancing and Facilitating Commerce and Internal Trade". The report calls on the federal government to take the lead in creating a new 7,000 kilometer corridor in Canada's North. The report calls on the federal government to take the lead in creating a new corridor in Canada's North that would span 7,000 kilometers. In its analysis, the committee took as its starting point the "Northern Corridor" proposal, which was previously outlined by Andrei Sulzenko and Garret Kent Fellows in a study jointly published in May 2016 by the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy and CIRANO.

The proposed Northern Corridor could accommodate road, rail, and pipeline transportation networks, as well as telecommunications and electricity distribution networks. It would cross Canada's North and could strengthen Canada's economy today with the same strength as the railroad of the 1800s, built to connect the country from coast to coast. With this corridor, Canada could access new foreign markets, allowing companies to ship their goods to northern ports. In this context, the committee specifically recommends that "the federal government provide up to $5 million to the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy and CIRANO for their research program on the development of a northern corridor in Canada".
