As part of the PRPG on public policies and the labour market, two complementary events were recently organized.
On November 20, 2025, during a lunchtime conference, Fabian Lange (McGill University, CIRANO) presented his research on labour-market mismatch in Quebec. He showed that although mismatch has slightly increased since 2016, it explains little of the recent rise in unemployment, which is driven in particular by the sharp growth in job vacancies in the health and social services sector.
On November 25, 2025, a roundtable on education, organized jointly by CIRANO and CIQSS, brought together Marie Connolly (Université de Montréal and CIRANO) and other researchers to discuss with ministries potential research directions that could inform public policy. Discussions focused on the links between educational pathways, career choices, and labour-market needs.
Together, these two activities underscore the importance of structured collaboration between academic research and government partners to better understand labour-market dynamics and support evidence-based policymaking.
