External activity - Pension plans: coverage trends and economic value

HEC Montréal - Édifice Hélène-Desmarais

Wednesday 1 Apr 2026
From 11:40AM To 1:15PM

Economic and policy changes over recent decades have led to a decline in employer-sponsored pension plan coverage. But how much value do Canadian workers actually place on these plans? Does that value vary by plan type, or by other characteristics?

On April 1st, the Retirement and Savings Institute will host a luncheon-Conference featuring Benoit Dostie (IRE, HEC Montréal, CIRANO), co-author of a study on the value of pension plans to workers, and Bernard Morency (IRE, C.D. Howe, HEC Montréal), to present and discuss the study’s findings and related issues. Benoit Dostie and his colleagues Pierre-Carl Michaud (HEC Montréal, CIRANO) and Todd Morris (University of Queensland) examined the issue using administrative data covering all Canadian workers over a 20-year period. The event will bring together academics, financial industry stakeholders, policymakers, and the informed public at HEC Montréal’s Hélène-Desmarais Pavilion in downtown Montréal for a rigorous but accessible discussion of the topic.

The event will be held in French.
